Opposition Leader Bill shorten announced sanction of around twenty new MRI machines in his budget reply speech last week. He did not specify how he is going to fund these machines.
In the past when Labour government made similar announcement, more MRI machines were sanctioned than the initial statement. This resulted in revenue loss as the proposed reduction in unwanted scans and x-rays as a compensatory measure did not eventuate.
The medicare rebate freeze is putting strain on already stretched general practitioners and medicare funded MRI machines is a feasible idea but may be a tough one as general practitioners would pass on the costs to the patients.
Private centre funded MRI machines where the patients pay for the services and subsequently gets reimbursed by Medicare may be another option.
